The majestic Northern Lights can be seen flickering

Far up in the north of Lapland, the majestic Northern Lights can be seen flickering across the arctic sky on no fewer than 200 nights a year. The Northern Lights usually appear in Lapland just before midnight, by which time the sky is sufficiently dark. As the night draws on, the Northern Lights may become so bright that they cast shadows on the ground. If you are lucky you may witness to the most beautiful configuration of all, the crown or corona, in which the dancing rays seem to spring from a single overhead source and the whole sky is bathed in light.

The holiday is in the Luosto region of Lapland which is one of the best locations in the world for observing the Northern Lights. The Sodankylä Geophysical Observatory not far away has roots dating back to the 1880s and is known internationally for its research. The Northern Lights are visible in Lapland from the end of August to the middle of April. Luosto is an excellent holiday location for skiers – It has several ski slopes and three lifts, along with the other many other facilities It has well-managed ski trails totalling 74 kilometres. Some are the trails are lit so you can enjoy skiing during the evenings. There are also marked trails for summer hikers in the region.

Information on Luosto

At Luosto you are in the middle of Lapland. You can enjoy all the services of a modern fell centre yet still be truly out in the wilds. Distance to Rovaniemi is ca. 120 kms. Luosto has seven ski slopes and three lifts, along with the other facilities required by skiers. It has well-managed ski trails totalling 74 kilometres, 25 kilometres of which are lit. There are also marked trails for summer hikers in the region. The new Pyhä-Luosto National Park in the process of being established will enhance the hiking potential even further.

Information on Amethyst mine:

On the top of Lampivaara fell there is the only operative amethyst mine in Europe. It may be the only gem mine in whole world that welcomes visitors. In warm cosy Lappish hut the mine visitors hear the fascinating stories of amethyst, how it was formed 2 000 000 millions of years ago, how the place was found and how the mine is run on permanent progress principle, how people in all cultures have believed in the mystical powers of amethyst and other interesting tales found in ancient legends. After stories the visitors are guided to the mine and each will dig and find a personal lucky amethyst for keeps.
