Enjoy a summer family holiday in the remote region of Kainuu in easternmost Finland, which is known for its pristine wilderness of lakes and vast forests. In the midst of this beauty you find the picturesque Hotel Kalevala overlooking Lake Lammasjärvi, presenting the ideal location for a spot of canoeing. Surrounded by old log houses and wonderful natural scenery as far as the eye can see, your summer adventure holiday is filled with fun activities including mushroom picking and berry picking.



Itinerary

Day 1 - UK - Kajaani

On arrival at Kajaani airport, transfer to the friendly lakeside Hotel Kalevala in the village of Kuhmo. Dinner in the hotel restaurant and overnight at Hotel Kalevala.

Day 2 - Fairy-tale Adventure Trail

Fairy-tale Adventure Trail Following breakfast at the hotel, your hostess will brief you on the programme for the coming week. Enjoy a boat trip on the lake before discovering the myths and legends of the Kalevala Adventure Trail. Join us for an exclusive experience that will revive your senses, and discover a whole new type of nature in the beautiful Nordic scenery. Escape to the heartland of the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, which offers a truly unique, magical experience for all your senses; a combination of the beauty of nature and fascinating ancient legends. Unspoiled nature can make you see things differently. Her bounty titillates your taste buds with smoked salmon and forest berries, downed with a sip of traditional liqueur. Exploring the perfect marriage of wood and traditional craftsmanship in the stately Pohjola House and its surrounding yard area, or escaping the howling of the wolves through an underground tunnel offer yet more thrilling experiences. Other highlights include a Kalevala exhibition, forge’s cabin, pine tar lodge bar and delicatessens where you can find authentic Finnish mementos and keepsakes to take home with you. This inspiring adventure takes you to the very heart of the Kalevala Spirit, where the mystical national epic is reborn into the present day. - Evening sauna and dinner

Day 3 - Farm visit, horse sleigh ride

Farm visit, horse sleigh ride After breakfast, we transfer to a local farm where you get to explore the Finnish countryside on a horse sleigh ride. Duration approximately 3 hours including a break for refreshments. Time to relax in the sauna before dinner. Enjoy the long daylight hours and continue the peaceful summer evening with some rowing and canoeing on the lake. Overnight at Hotel Kalevala.

Day 4 - Day at leisure

Day at leisure After breakfast, the day is at your leisure to try some of the many optional activities or perhaps just to relax with a spa treatment at the hotel. Please see below the comprehensive range of activities available for you and your family. Sauna, dinner and overnight at Hotel Kalevala.

Day 5 - Berry and Mushroom picking

Berry and Mushroom picking Following breakfast, explore the pure wilderness of the Kainuu region on a guided mushroom and berry picking trip. We start our tour from the shore of the Hotel Kalevala and continue by rowing boat to some of the many islands to be found in Lake Lammasjärvi or walk to the forests near the hotel depending on where the best berries may be found. Refreshments will be served on the sandy beach near the forest and later we prepare a delicious lunch on the campfire by the lake using the berries and mushrooms we picked earlier. Approximate duration 3-4 hours. Sauna and dinner at Hotel Kalevala.

Day 8 - Kuhmo - UK

After breakfast, there is still time to enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Hotel Kalevala before transfering to Kajaani airport for your return flight to the UK. Or why not stopover in the Finnish capital of Helsinki on your way back? Please ask for details.

Bear watching night

Meeting the “Wild Brown Bear” in its natural environment, the wild taiga, is an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. The Brown Bear and other rare animals such as the wolverine and wild deer can be viewed from three specially designed hides. All hides are equipped with comfortable viewing chairs, sleeping areas, hearing amplifier system and toilets. Bus transfer from the hotel close to the Russian border in the wild region of Kuhmo on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 15.45. Return next morning at 7.30 am. Price includes refreshments and sandwiches, sleeping bags, sound equipment, Bear Night Diploma, insurance and personal tour guide. Equipment recommended to bring: clothes according to weather forecast, binoculars, video and camera.

Biathlon competition

At the Kalevala ski centre next to the hotel you get the chance to practise the biathlon. A professional guide will teach you the shooting technique and we organise an informal competition including shooting. Juice will be served and diploma awarded as part of the package.
