Mountain bikes, rowing boats, canoes and fishing equipment can all be borrowed from the Hotel Kalevala during your free time. There are also miles and miles of hiking trails surrounding the hotel, offering chances to spot some of the native wildlife.
The Hotel Kalevala has an excellent restaurant where delicious local dishes are served. Much of the food is made with locally sourced ingredients, giving you a real taste of Finland during your family summer adventure. There is also a sauna and Jacuzzi at the hotel which is the perfect place to relax after an energetic day spent in the outdoors on a family summer adventure.

Landing at Kajaani Airport, transfer to the superb area of Lake Lammasjärvi where the Hotel Kalevala sits peacefully on the shore. A warm welcome and a tasty dinner await your arrival. This evening, why not kick-start your family summer adventure with a leisurely walk to explore the idyllic surroundings?

The Kalevala Adventure Trail

After a delicious breakfast, meet up with your family summer adventure guide who will take you on a fascinating tour of the surrounding area, imparting historic legends and stories about the spirit of the Kalevala. Take a boat trip on the lake, amble through the forests and find out about the traditional lifestyles and culture of the indigenous people at Pohjola House.

Day 3 -
Visit a Husky Farm

Huskies are so valuable to people who live in these parts of the world. During the winter months when snow completely covers the ground, a husky sled may be their only means of transport. Today on your family summer adventure you can meet and pet these excitable and friendly dogs, and find out how they are trained and cared for.

Day 4 -
Day at leisure

Today, spend some free time on your family summer adventure doing whatever takes your fancy. You might like to go swimming in the crystal clear waters of the lake, or take a rowing boat or canoe across the serene waters. There are plenty of hiking trails surrounding the hotel, or you may want to try a spot of fishing. For adrenaline seekers, have a go at mountain biking through the forests. Relax at the end of the day with a soothing sauna, and afterwards tuck into a delicious evening meal.

Day 5 -
Berry and Mushroom Picking

At this time of year, berries and mushrooms thrive in the forests surrounding the Hotel Kalevala. With the help of your guide, you might find blueberries, lingonberries, cranberries and cloudberries, as well as different varieties of mushroom. Have a picnic lunch by an open fire and cook whatever delicious foods you have found using your guide’s traditional recipes.
