Enjoy winter activities deep in central Finland

Winter activity breaks in an epic arctic setting of Finland which is ideal for skiing. The opulent Hotel Kalevala is situated next to the iridescent frozen Lake Lammasjärvi in the breath taking region of Kuhum which shares a border with Russia. Various activities are available including a husky safari, snowmobiling, skiing and ice fishing, tobogganing and ice skating. The snow covered landscape of this Finnish region makes it ideal for winter activity breaks.

Next door to the hotel is the ski centre, which has several trails which are floodlit in the evening. In total, there are about 100 km of marked ski-routes and 400 km of marked snowmobile tracks, making this activity break ideal for all various of skiers.  Also nearby is the Petola Nature Centre which boasts a large carnivore exhibition and the Winter War Museum. Your children will love visting our reindeers Klinton and Moonika who live next to hotel and during the festive period your family can visit the Christmas Village(open 1.12.2008 – 15.1.2009). Once a week we hold a Finnish Evening with traditional Karelian food and folklore-programme. Our winter activity breaks in Finland are an extraordinary combination of epic scenery, thrilling activities and luxurious accommodation.

At the Kalevala Ski centre, next to the hotel you have the possibility to practise biathlon.  First we will learn shooting with a professional guide, then afterwards there will be an easy "competition" with 2 x 1 km skiing and 2 x shooting.  Hot juice and diploma included.

As in the real Olympic Games, we too will start the Hotel Kalevala mini Olympics by singing the Olympic anthem, taking the Olympic oath, hoisting the colours and lighting the Olympic flame.  The Olympics in the Kalevala style may begin, events include: lie-down darts, tandem skiing, boring ice, downhill sliding relay, milking competition, kick-sledding, boot throwing...

Winter Evening By A Fire in Harakkasaari Island

Min 8 persons.

We will go to Harakkasaari island with cross-country Skies, by walk or by snowshoes, distance approximately 1 kilometre.  A lean-to with reindeer hides will be waiting for us. We will have a typical Finnish campfire meal: sausages, salad and coffee with buns.  The evening continues singing campfire songs and playing snow war.
