Family activity short break

For a fun-packed winter break nowhere offers more than northern Finland’s beautiful natural wilderness.   Our family activity breaks are in the pristine winter setting of Iso-Syöte which is just below Lapland.  You can choose from a wide range of fabulous winter activities including snowmobiling, snowshoe hiking, husky safaris and ice fishing – you may even see the incredible Northern Lights.

 

Known as the gateway to Lapland, Iso-Syöte lies in Finland’s southernmost fell region and boasts some of the country’s heaviest snowfall. Throughout the winter a deep blanket of glistening snow covers the beautiful landscape of fells and forests making it the ideal location for arctic activity breaks. 

Nearby you will also find 12 downhill slopes, a snowboard street, half pipes and a snow tube run where you can slide down the slope in a large rubber tyre. The gentle fell area is ideal both for beginners and cross country skiers, with 75 miles of well maintained trails starting from just outside the hotel.  The highlight of this family activity break is that there is a diverse range of activities available; from mild forms of exercise such as snowshoe hiking and ice fishing to more extreme arctic sports such as husky sledging and snowmobile safaris.

A long snowmobile adventure at 10:30

A real snowmobile adventure: a whole day ahead of driving by snowmobile, far out in the nature and the snow covered forests, driving to various type of terrain. A challenging ride of about 80-100km.  We recommend one person per snowmobile to really enjoy the fun and geeting the chance to be an experienced driver. Up and down hills, making the right curves and moves while using your bodyweight makes it even more exciting. We stop to make a campfire and have an outdoor lunch.

Action snowmobile adventure at 14:30

This Action Snowmobile safari is for those who like to speed a bit faster with snowmobiles. Before the safari you must have been driving snowmobiles earlier in the week. We also recommend to drive 1 person / Snowmobile, and this is included in the price shown.
Included: Driving on varying routes, safari outfit and a soft drink.
Duration: Approx 2.5 - 3 hours (45-55km).
Departs: 2:30pm Thursdays.

Full day husky safari including campfire lunch at 10:30

Transportation to the place where the huskies are eagerly waiting for visitors to come. Introduction to team dogs and instructions upon arrival before husky sledge ride. The safari route goes through snowy forests and ice covered lakes and swamps in Syote nature area. Along the way there will be a sandwich lunch near the campfire, and other stops to switch drivers and to take pictures. The journey with the huskies is approx 30/40 km in total.

Ice Fishing at 10:00

Ice rally driving at 18:00

A special rally track has been prepared with snowy and iced curved roads. Reijo, a professional rally driver, is waiting for you to teach you how to drive these specially prepared rally cars. After some practice loops with front and rear wheel steering cars you can make your fina loop to clock your best time ever!

Transfers by car to and from the rally-circuit are included.

Kicksledge glides and rides at 14:30

A real Finnish way of moving around when snow covers the paths. Kicksledges are big fun to glide down the hill and 'kicking' them forwards with one leg while the other is standing on one glider to hold the grip. Snowfun and action on the Iso Syote hilltop and all the way down the hill to the Lappish kota where the campfire will be made and coffee and pulla will be served. We transport you back up the hill by car.

Included : Kicksledges, safari outfit, hotdrink in kota near campfire.

Northern Light Safari at 20:00

A nightime snowmobile safari has a special atmosphere when driving under twinkling stars on the fells and through the snowy forests. We stop to admire the stars in the sky. We'll have a coffee break by an open campfire. When you are lucky, you might see the Northern Lights!

Reindeer safari the old-fashioned way

This is a pleasant way of traveling sitting in a reindeer sleigh watching reindeer “caravan” move when connected by a leather rope to each other. Coffee and sandwiches are served in a “kota” teepee.
Included: Reindeer program, coffee, sandwiches and safari outfit.
Duration: Approx. 2.5 - 3 hours (4 km).
Requirements: The safari does not require any previous experience.

Snowmobile safari & husky safari 6km at 10:00

Safari starts from Hotel Iso Syote by snowmobile to the place where the huskies are eagerly waiting for visitors. After introduction to the huskies and instruction, you take off with the huskies, strongly pulling your sledge. The safari route goes through snowy forests and ice covered swamps in Syote area. There are stops to switch drivers and to take pictures.

Snowmobile safari to reindeer farm at 10:00

A snowmobile safari through snowy forests and over ice covered lakes to a reindeer farm. Introduction of farm and reindeer herding. Visitors will have the chance to ride in a sledge pulled by a reindeer and try to throw the Lappish Lasso.
Coffee and pulla will be served at the farm.

Snowmobile safari to wilderness

The safari starts from the hotel where the snowmobiles are lined up. The track goes first down hill, and then onwards along the fells, through the forest with heavy snow covered trees and over ice covered swamps or lakes. We stop to make a coffee by the campfire. After the break we start the snowmobiles again to drive back up the Iso Syote hill. Included Snowmobile safari, hot drink (coffee/tea and buns), safari outfit.

Snowmobilesafari to a frozen lake and ice fishing at 10:00

We start from the hotel by snowmobile to travel through the forest to go to a frozen lake. We bring the gear with us to drill the holes in the ice and go ice fishing on this beautiful lake. Coffee break by an open fire. By snowmobile again back to the hotel.

Snowshoe hiking adventure at 14:00

Our trip starts from the hotel after personal instructions how to use snowshoes. The trip goes through the deep snow covering the hilltop of Iso Syote. Enjoying the views and the beautiful snow sculptures made by nature. During the break theforests and on the fells surrounding Hotel Iso-Syöte. Hot drink and “pulla” are served during the break. Return to the hotel.

Visit to reindeer farm by car

We start from the hotel and drive towards Virkkunen’s traditional reindeer farm which is situated 18 km from the hotel. At the farm the owner tells about reindeer herding and the life at the farm. Coffee and sandwiches and a reindeer driving test. Return back to the hotel.
Included: Transportation, coffee, sandwiches, reindeer drive and a diploma.

Accommodation

Hotel Iso-Syöte
Ideally located on top of a 1,400 foot fell, this friendly and relaxed hotel offers fantastic panoramic views of the surrounding area and easy access to the adjacent slopes. All 30 double rooms offer private facilities and satellite TV with non-smoking and allergy rooms available. After a day’s winter activities the swimming pool and saunas are great places to relax. The main restaurant offers excellent meals and dance music. There is also a pleasant lounge bar and a small nightclub.

Cabins
A very popular choice is to stay in one of the hotel’s traditional rustic cabins located 300 yards from the main building. Built from silver pine logs, these cosy cabins are usually covered in snow during winter creating a true picture postcard atmosphere for an authentic Lapland experience. The cabins sleep up to four people with a double bedroom, living room with sofa beds and open fireplace, sauna, shower, toilet, porch and kitchen with crockery, refrigerator, coffee maker and oven. Guests can use all the facilities of the hotel.
