Bird Watching (By car or cycle)

Get acquainted with fabulous species of birds on family wildlife holidays.
Target birds: The species for the area are dwellers of bogs and old forests. Eurasian Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) and Black Grouse (Tetrao tetrix) are rather common in the region, while also Willow Ptarmigan (Lagopus lagopus) and Hazel Grouse (Bonasa bonasia) can be observed. Common Cranes (Grus grus) are beginning the long migration to over-winter in the south. Some birds of prey can be still observed along open bogs, for instance, Osprey (Pandion haliaetus) and Eurasian Hobby (Falco subbuteo), and many others are passing this region along their migratory route. Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) is rare. Black Woodpecker (Dryocopus martius) and Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major) are rather common, while also Three-toed Woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus) and Lesser Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos minor) can be found regularly in the area through the year. Siberian Jay (Perisoreus infaustus) is a trusting species of old spruce forests, but rather uncommon in this region.

Day 3 -
Canoeing

19:00 ”NIGHT WALK: BATS AND OTHER MAMMALS” (4-6 hours, on foot or by bicycle) Nights of late summer and early fall are getting darker and there is scent of autumn in the air. Nature prepares for the long winter – that means continuous eating for many animals either to increase fat reservoirs or to collect storages. Bats are hunting actively when the weather is good. Otter, beaver, moose etc. are active as well. Target species: Several species of bats, for instance, Northern Bat (Eptesicus nilssonii), Flying Squirrel (Pteromys volans), Beaver (Castor canadensis), Otter (Lutra lutra) and Moose (Alces alces).

Day 4 -
“BOG TRIP TO TIILIKKAJÄRVI NATIONAL PARK”

8-10 Breakfast “BOG TRIP TO TIILIKKAJÄRVI NATIONAL PARK” (8 hours by bus, lunch on the field) The area is valuable in terms of conservation as it is a transition zone for forest and mire types. Wilderness-like ridges and aapa bogs surrounded by Sheathed Cottonsedge (Eriophorum vaginatum) meet here. Today on family wildlife holidays we will become acquainted with the exotic ecosystem of bogs, together with carnivorous plants, diverse mosses and avifauna.
