Our Volcano Walking Adventure is ideal for those looking for volcanic discovery; mountain hikes; nature spotting and breathtaking landscapes.
Rising up from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and resting above a junction between three tectonic plates are the Azores islands. The largest, São Miguel, is your destination for this Volcano Walking Adventure.
Hosting some of the Azores most astonishing volcanic formations, São Miguel boasts a fascinating range of craters, fumaroles and breathtaking terrains. This diverse range of natural attractions acts as fitting testament to the island’s volcanic nature. And, on this holiday, you’ll be able to explore this lava-sculpted landscape and get up close to the volcanoes themselves.
Travellers will stay in the Hotel Terra Nostra, a luxurious and contemporary four star hotel. The elegant, stylish interior and generously appointed rooms here make this the perfect relaxing base for your Volcano Walking Adventure. The hotel grounds are none other than the Terra Nostra Botanical Garden. This beautifully cultivated garden is home to an intriguing geological feature of its own; the Thermal Water Pool. Underground geothermal currents keep the water heated to a pleasant 35-40° and both locals and guests bathe here in the fabulous waters. Thanks to its mineral content, the colour of the water may be slightly unusual here but the experience is pure relaxation!
During the Volcano Walking Adventure you will visit several of the island’s volcanic craters; including Sete Cidades with its dual-coloured lakes. The tour also includes a visit to Lagoa do Fogo; the most turbulent lake in the Azores. This crater-lake is an awe inspiring sight, perfect for photography enthusiasts.
When you’re not on self-guided walks, São Miguel boasts plenty of other attractions. In the Furnas Valley, for example, you can try food cooked underground courtesy of the geothermal currents - an opportunity not-to-be-missed!
Want to swap walking for wildlife? Our Whale Watching Week could be just the thing!
