As the FIS World Cup opening in Ruka teeters on the horizon, locals prepare for the usual influx of excited winter sport fans. From 29th November to December 1st, crowds will descend upon the beautiful landscapes of Nordic Ruka to witness the talents of athletes participating in the ski-jumping, cross-country skiing and Nordic combined events. If, like me, you harbour a not-so-secret passion for adrenalin-fuelled games, you will love this fabulous destination.
The Mighty Fine Company’s Ruka breaks provide plenty of opportunities to test your skills on the slopes. One of the things that excited me most about Ruka is the ease of access to snowmobiling, husky dog sledding and of course, Northern Lights safaris – after all, a trip to the Arctic wouldn’t be complete without an attempt to see the Lights, would it?
There is nothing like an early morning ride on a snowmobile to set you up for the day and the spectacular landscapes of Ruka are certainly worth getting out of bed early for. Although a lover of all winter sports, there was one activity I had never experienced: ice kart racing. This definitely takes a lot of skill, so be prepared to put the time in to become a pro!
For me, the most important element of any adventure holiday is the promise of good food and a comfortable bed when you return from a day in the snow. Not only is this a given during a holiday in Ruka, but the accommodation excelled my expectations with its lakeside location and hospitable staff. Staying in a beautiful log cabin, I was free to use the nearby hotel’s facilities yet remained secluded enough to enjoy time to myself when I felt the need.
The Mighty Fine’s Finnish Log Cabin Holidays at Rukan Salonki is just one of the incredible seasonal breaks on offer in this magical destination, so why not take a look and plan some real fun?
