Whenever a natural disaster occurs, it is usually only a matter of time before a blockbuster film is released. One cinematic piece which deviates from traditional ‘disaster film’ guidelines, however, is the excruciatingly difficult to pronounce, Eyjafjallajökull.
Many film-makers would seize the opportunity to focus on the fiery details of this eponymous film, opting to make an action-packed disaster movie about the famous volcanic eruption. This was not, however, the approach of writers, Yoann Gromb, Alexandre Coffe, Laurent Zeitoun and director, Alexandre Safe. They preferred to create a reflective love story, revolving around the tale of a divorced couple set to attend their daughter’s wedding in 2011.
Eyjafjallajökull is a romantic comedy about the personal consequences of the chaos caused by the eruption and the subsequent cancellation of European flights. Featuring an eventful car journey from France to Greece, this is one piece of cinema that takes a whimsical look at our ability to cope with the unforeseen! Well worth a watch!
