Knitting a Song in Iceland

Knitting hands

When Icelandic composer Hafdís Bjarnadóttir moved to Denmark in 2008, her fusion of jazz, classical, folk and blues really took off. And that’s when Hafdís noticed a similarity between a score by composer Gyorgy Ligeti and the knitting pattern for a lacy shawl.

Hafdís’ resulting composition, Thordis’ Fichu, row 1-12, became her Master’s project. Two of its seven parts are now complete and it even features silences where the knitting pattern has holes!
