There is nothing more bracing or exciting than the thought of guiding a powerful machine through a snow-filled wilderness. You could be forgiven for thinking that one snowmobiling excursion is much the same as another but my time in Helsinki proved that differing landscapes make for unique experiences.
From the moment the guide met us at the hotel, I was made to feel comfortable and relaxed and the added bonus of the snowmobiling overalls, boots, gloves and a helmet being provided meant all I had to do was concentrate on enjoying the tour. Our snowmobiling route took us through snow-speckled forests and frosted fields, but tours can differ depending on the weather. The thirty minute minibus journey to our starting point provided plenty of photographic opportunities and gave me time to get to know my snowmobiling companions.
I can honestly say ploughing a snowmobile through snow-topped terrains is the best off-road driving experience anyone can have. Stopping for drinks, snacks and banter (and an impromptu snowball fight!) around the campfire, remains one of the highlights of my snowmobiling trip. I would recommend taking advantage of the extra activities available as a soothing sauna and filling hot meal was just what I needed after a day among the elements. One of the many great things about a snowmobiling safari is that it can be extended so, if you fancy a spot of snowshoeing or even ice fishing, these can also be arranged at additional cost.
