Tromso : City Breaks

Explore Arctic treasures on our Tromso City Breaks

Known as the Arctic capital, the Norwegian city of Tromso has a great deal to offer visitors all year round and our Tromso City Breaks give you four days in this fabulous location to discover its treasures at your own pace.

Besides a Northern Lights excursion on our winter itinerary, all activities are optional on our Tromso City Breaks, giving you the freedom to create a getaway that suits you perfectly!

Take a look at what's on offer to find your perfect break.

The City

Tromso city centre is situated on the island of Tromsoya, in the county of Troms, 350km north of the Arctic Circle. Benefitting from the warmth of the Gulf Stream, the city is more temperate than many other locations on the same latitude and thus proves extremely popular with visitors throughout the year.

The Attractions

Whether you take our Tromso City Breaks in winter or summer you can look forward to a host of attractions to explore. The city boasts the largest number of traditional wooden houses in Northern Norway, with the oldest dating back to 1789. A far more modern attraction is the Arctic Cathedral, built in 1965 and and famed for its fabulous design and amazing midnight concerts. The people of Tromso like to party and there are many festivals here celebrating the music, arts and culture of the region. And when it comes to great views, you’ll get the best from the top of Mount Storsteinen which can be reached by the city’s famous cable car.

Summertime Fun

Enjoy the Midnight Sun on our Tromso City Breaks

Take Tromso City Breaks in summer and discover the world of the Midnight Sun. Extended daylight hours mean you can squeeze every last drop of enjoyment out of each and every day. Start off with a walking tour of the city, learning all about its history, heritage and connections with famous explorers. Take in a concert at the Arctic Cathedral – Norway’s only Gothic wooden structure – and lose yourself in the music of Bach and Mendelssohn.

If you want to liven things up a little, how about a trip to Villmarkssenter – the home of the world’s most famous dog sled race? Here you can meet huskies and try outdoor pursuits including sea kayaking, mountaineering and glacier walking. A popular option for families is our horse riding excursion as, indeed, are trips to the local beaches to watch seals as they laze on the shoreline and eagles as they hunt for prey.

Winter Wonders

Our Tromso City Breaks in winter have a completely different focus. The city is a real centre for Northern Lights spotting and so each break starts off with a full-on Northern Lights adventure where you set out in search of the Aurora using the latest forecasts and local knowledge. An added bonus on this tour is the advice you will get on Northern Lights photography, helping you to capture the perfect image. Just imagine the souvenir shots you could take back home!

If you’re something of an outdoor enthusiast, you’ll love our Tromso City Breaks in winter. As well as all the fabulous treasures of the city centre, you can get out and about and try your hand at snowmobiling and husky sledding and even enjoy a spot of whale watching! You’ll take to your snowmobile in the foothills of the Lyngen Alps, go husky sledding at night for another possible glimpse of the Aurora and set sail in a RIB to search for Humpback and Orca Whales. The range of activities on our Tromso City Breaks is simply amazing and, as they are all optional, you can choose the elements you like best to ensure you get the most out of your time in this fabulous city.
