Congo Holidays

A relatively small, central African territory, with an area of 342,000sq km and a population of 4.2 million, the Republic of Congo is not to be confused with the much larger and sometimes troubled Democratic Republic of Congo. Indeed, one of the many attractions of Congo holidays is the fact that this is an emerging destination, one where tourism is only just starting to break through, where you can still witness an authentic slice of Africa, knowing that you are amongst the first to explore the wildlife riches here.

The Republic of Congo has a sparse population and, as some 80% of the country is covered in dense rainforest, it comes as no surprise that over 85% of inhabitants live in the capital Brazzaville, the second city Pointe-Noire and the various villages which line the railway connecting the two.

The Congo rainforest is known for its biodiversity, featuring over 600 species of trees and 10,000 animal species. Choose Congo holidays for a real pioneer experience and see the sheer beauty of this country before other tourists arrive.

Holidays in the Republic of the Congo

Wildlife

The lush rainforest in the Republic of Congo boasts a wide range of fascinating creatures including elephants, chimpanzees, leopards, lions and hippos. Arguably the most fascinating of them all, however, is the Western Lowland Gorilla. Distinguished from other gorilla subspecies by their slightly smaller size, brown-grey coats and auburn chests, they also have wider skulls and smaller ears.  The sight of these amazing creatures in their natural habitat, on Congo holidays, is something you surely will never forget.

National Parks

The Republic of Congo boasts some of the most remote and stunning national parks imaginable including the Odzala-Kokoua and the Nouabale-Ndoki. Odzala-Kokoua is part of the world’s second largest rainforest – the Congo Basin. Covering an area of 13,500sq km, this is one of Africa’s oldest national parks and a real treasure, featuring 430 bird species, over 100 mammal species and the highest number of diurnal primates of any forest block in central Africa. At 3,921sq km, Nouabale-Ndoki is a much smaller park, yet its range of elephants, apes, birds and plants are no less impressive, as you’re sure to discover on Congo holidays.

Culture

Take one of our Congo holidays and you’ll immediately notice the strong French influence here. The country was occupied by France in 1882 and absorbed into French Equatorial Africa in 1910. Traditional and modern dance play an important part in Congolese culture and should you want to bring home a taste of the Congo, the intricate carvings produced locally are well worth a look.
