Jouko and Mari Lappalainen have built an enviable reputation Lapland (North of Finland) over recent years. As the popularity of their resorts has increased they have put together an experienced team of guides; and this combined with the resorts' remote location makes these the perfect bases for the full range of Lapland's finest experiences, including; snowmobiling, dog-sledding, reindeer sledding and northern lights hunting. The welcoming ambience they have created in this resort (and the sister resort at Nellim), makes it a firm favourite with all their guests.
The Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge nestles in the heart of Finland’s untouched countryside, among the Saariselkä fells in Kakslauttanen. For anyone wanting to experience the great outdoors, this is the ideal place to stay, as the endless snowy tracks are perfect for skiing, snowmobiling and husky sledding. Because of the northerly location of the Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge and the lack of light pollution, there are many opportunities to spot the Northern Lights between September and March. The nearest airport to the lodge is just a 40 minute drive away and there are also transport links to Rovaniemi, home to the magical Santa Village.
Cabins and Apartments
There is a wide range of accommodation available at Muotkan Maja, catering for all types of traveller. The Log Cabins and Apartments are in traditional buildings (often in a traditional kelo log style) giving guests a real taste of the cosy and rustic charm of Northern Finland. The finest accommodation at this resort is undoubtedly the newly built log cabins. With the large north facing panoramic windows (8m2 in size!), they allow stunning views of the picturesque rural Lapland landscapes by day and unparalleled views of the Arctic sky at night, where the Aurora Borealis gracefully decorates the polar inky black canvas with hues of green, purple and white.
For those not staying in one of the newer Log Cabins, Muotkan Maja boasts an alternative contemporary designer "Aurora Kota". The kota is a traditional Lappish building, with a conical shape, specially adapted to the difficult Arctic climate. These 21st century alternatives have been specially adapted by turning a portion of the conical roof into a viewing window by making them out of glass!. The views in these comfy cabins are perfect for all Aurora Hunters. Taking upto four people and equipped with private facilities (including saunas and showers), these Aurora Kotas are popular with romantic couples but also suitable for small families too. Availability of these popular cabins is always very limited but it's perfect for adventurers looking to spend a night sleeping somewhere "out of the ordinary"!
At Muotkan Maja Wilderness Lodge, the focus is placed on its picturesque location, however, the rooms are adequately and comfortably furnished to ensure guests have a relaxed stay. Several of the 11 rooms present visitors with beautiful views of the enveloping forest, bringing them closer to the wildlife and nature of Finland.
