Discover Bear Watching in Finland and search for these mighty creatures in the Wild Taiga

What Makes Me Mighty Fine

  • Wildlife watching short break, in Europe’s last, untamed wilderness, with a night in a forest hide and two nights in a hotel
  • Visit Petola Nature Centre and learn all about the creatures of the forest
  • Experience other wildlife, including wolverine and elk, with a range of optional activities

Not many people get the chance to see these fantastic animals in their natural surroundings, but our Brown Bear Watching, Finland itinerary offers that once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The Brown Bear can be found in North America and Northern Europe and of the 200,000 worldwide, 1,600 are in Finland alone. They are primarily nocturnal and, in the summer months, they can be seen foraging for food to build up their body weight so they can survive the cold winter. Brown Bears are solitary creatures and are not usually seen in groups, but you may be lucky enough to see a female with her cubs during our Bear Watching in Finland holiday, as the young stay with the mother for up to four years after birth.

The epic boreal forest where the Brown Bears reside, known as the Taiga, is home to a wealth of other wildlife too. During your time on our Bear Watching Finland holiday you might also see elk, reindeer, wolverine, owls, eagles, lynx and wolves. You will spend a whole night in a forest hide, during your holiday but, thanks to Kuhmo’s northerly location, it stays light well into the evening and the sun rises very early in the morning, meaning most of your viewing will be in daylight.

Accommodation on this Bear Watching Finland holiday is at the family-run Hotel Kalevala in Kuhmo, near the Russian border. The hotel offers various outdoor activities which you can take part in during your free time, and a sauna which is perfect for relaxing in. With a beautiful location on the shores of Lake Lammasjärvi, this really is a fabulous choice for a short break.
