As you journey, on this fly drive, from one special destination to another, you will become acquainted with the fascinating culture and the amazing flora and fauna of the remote regions of Finland, as well as being able to take part in exciting activities like canoeing and hiking.
During our Finland Wildlife Holidays you journey from Kuopio, which is considered the cultural centre of eastern Finland, to Rovaniemi, an area above the Arctic Circle which has remarkable hiking areas. As you travel from one spectacular destination to another, you will stay in some fantastic accommodation, ranging from cosy log cabins to rooms in friendly hotels, where you can relax after the day’s activities with a traditional Finnish sauna.
Journeying through the Wild Taiga, on our Finland Wildlife Holidays, you will be able to explore the habitats of lynx and bears, close to the Russian border, as well as discovering the Arctic wildlife of Northern Finland. Day 1 - Arrive in Kuopio
After arriving in Kuopio, collect your hire car which will take you to a host of exciting locations over the next eight days on our Finland Wildlife Holidays. Those on early flights will have time to enjoy this wonderful city, which is home to a bustling market and harbour. Perhaps you would like to admire the beautiful views over Lake Kallavesi before retiring for the night at the Metsäkartano Mansion.Meals included:Dinner
Day 2 - Explore a National Park
There are two national parks in easy reach of Metsäkartano – the Tiilikkäjarvi National Park and the Hiidenportti National Park. Whichever you choose to visit on our Finland Wildlife Holidays, you're sure to be blown away by the scenery. Tiilikkäjarvi offers lakeside views, beaches and easy walking routes, whilst Hiidenportti National Park is quite hilly with more demanding walking trails. Remember to take a picnic lunch to the park as there are no dining facilities. Tonight you will stay, once again, at the Metsäkartano Mansion.Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner
Day 3 - Wildlife Watching at Kalevala
Today you say goodbye to Metsäkartano and head to the village of Kalevala via Nurmes in Karelia. You can visit the Karelian Bomba House for some lunch before travelling through the Wild Taiga, where you can enjoy a thrilling safari (booked before departure for an additional cost) and observe fascinating wildlife such as wolverines. The next stop on our Finland Wildlife Holidays is Kuhmo. This information centre in this small village provides the ideal opportunity to learn about local culture.Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner
Day 4 - Meet the Brown Bears
This morning visit the Petola Visitor Centre which has information on Finland’s largest wildlife like bears, wolves and lynxes. As you travel along the sparse areas which lie next to the Russian border you will pass through the beautiful villages of Lentilra. During this part of our Finland Wildlife Holidays you can stop off at the historical area of Raate which was the setting for many battles during the Second World War. To learn more about the history of the place, visit the Raate Frontier Guard Museum and the Winter War Exhibition. Tonight you will stay in Juntusranta, just beside the Russian border.Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner
Day 5 - Hiking in Hossa
Heading north, on our Finland Wildlife Holidays, you will reach the national hiking area of Hossa, home to outstanding scenery, crystal clear lakes and beautiful pine heathlands. As well as hiking, you can enjoy a number of pursuits in the area such as fishing and canoeing. You might like to take a hike in Värikalliot to see the 4000 year old rock paintings. Elsewhere in the area, the reindeer park enables you to get to know the native wildlife by feeding them or learning how to lasso them. Take time to visit the Tourist and Nature Centre, Karhuntassu, before spending the night at the cosy Ollila Holiday Cottages.Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner
Day 6 - Kuusamo
After breakfast, visit Oulanka National Park or Ruka - one of the most popular skiing resorts in the country. The national park is an ideal location to admire the area's plant and wildlife as well as sampling popular hiking trails such as the Small Bear’s Trail. The beautiful scenery of marshes, sandy banks and pine valleys provides a delightful hiking backdrop. At Ruka, you can climb the hills for spectacular views or, if you are feeling less energetic, take the Ruka Lookout Lift before descending on a thrilling speedy summer sled. Both areas offer safaris and activities for different ages and abilities.Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner
Day 7 - The Arctic Circle
The seventh day of our Finland Wildlife Holidays gives you chance to experience life in the Arctic. You may opt for more hiking, at the Riisitunturi National Park or the Korouoma Nature Reserve, or travel to Ranua Zoo where incredible wildlife - including the only polar bears in Finland - can be found. Rovaniemi is also known as the city of Santa Claus and it has a wonderfully festive atmosphere even in summer! During our Finland Wildlife Holidays you can visit the Santa Claus Post Office or the Christmas Exhibition to get a taste of local Christmas traditions. You can also find out more about Arctic traditions in the Arktikum - a fascinating science centre and museum. The last night of your Finland Wildlife Holidays is spent at Hotel Santa claus, where you will sleep in a fantastic cabin with a genuine Finnish sauna.Meals included:Breakfast
Day 8 - Departure
After seven, action-packed days on our Finland Wildlife Holidays, searching for local wildlife and getting to grips with local culture, it's time to return home. Once you have had breakfast you will drive to Rovaniemi Airport to drop off your hire car and board your return flight.Meals included:Breakfast
