Iceland : Holidays and Adventures

Amazing attractions await on our Iceland Holidays

Just over a third the size of the UK, yet with a population roughly half the size of Glasgow, Iceland is a fabulous destination. And when it comes to getaways, Iceland Holidays are the perfect choice for anyone looking to get close to nature.

The nature of Iceland never disappoints. Situated on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and volcanic in origin, Iceland is one of the world’s hotspots for geothermal activity, having hosted 30 post glacial eruptions in the last 200 years! The island’s origins are simply impossible to miss as you cast your eyes over its lava-sculpted terrains and otherworldly landscape. The geothermal currents here actually provide naturally heated water and pollution free heating for a large proportion of the population. They are also responsible for many of the attractions that entice so many to choose Iceland Holidays. There is simply so much nature here to enjoy. Many areas of the island are uninhabitable (particularly the 11% covered by glaciers!) so most settlements are near the coast, leaving the inland area free for countless excursions and adventures!

South Iceland

Home to: the capital city, Reykjavik; the Blue Lagoon and a range of other attractions, the south is a fabulous place to visit on Iceland Holidays. In the thriving metropolis of Reykjavik you can discover an intriguing blend of historical architecture and modern city life. Boasting attractions including the world’s oldest Parliament building, the renowned Hallgrimskirkja Church and the breathtaking Lake Tjörnin, Reykjavik provides ample opportunities to experience the almost tangible Viking history of the country.

The Reykjanes Peninsula is one of south Iceland’s biggest attractions. The land here has been moulded by the unique volcanic history of the region to the point that visitors on Iceland Holidays describe its craterous surface as being more like the moon than the earth! Between the peninsula and Reykjavik lies the world famous Blue Lagoon. This glistening lake is heated by a geothermal current and is so rich in minerals that many believe it heals those who bathe here.

The unforgettable Golden Circle can also be found in the south. Here you can discover the incredible Silfra Fissure; a rift between two tectonic plates, as well as the many other wonders of the þingvellir National Park and the breathtaking Gullfoss Waterfall and Geysir Springs. Iceland Holidays with a Golden Circle tour allow you to witness some of the world’s most awe-inspiring geological features and formations. For many, these amazing structures are some of the prime reasons to visit this amazing country.

West Iceland

Discover scenic wonders on our Iceland holidays

The highlight of west Iceland is the Snæfellsnes Peninsula; the fourth community in the world to be certified by EarthCheck for sustainable tourism. This region is home to the magnificent Snæfellsjökull Volcano, a towering formation with a glacier at its peak. The volcano is well known as the setting for Jules Verne’s novel: Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and it’s easy to see where the idea comes from as you stand in the shadow of this natural wonder on your Iceland holiday.

North Iceland

Iceland Holidays to the north provide the unique chance to explore the area around Skagafjörður. Step into the volcanic crater of Grábok, a 3000 year old dead volcano inside the lava field it created. This site is the largest of three in the area and all are open for exploration. When you’re not delving into craters, enjoy the great photographic opportunities here. And what better photo of an Iceland Holiday could there be than one set against the backdrop of its largest fjord; Eyjafjörður? Another popular excursion here is the ferry ride to Hrísey Island in the middle of the fjord. Here you can make the most of the incredible bird watching opportunities. Thanks to its total lack of predators, the island is the ideal natural bird sanctuary, brimming with a whole host of different species.

Whilst in the north, be sure to visit Húskavik - one of Iceland’s best whale watching spots and a fantastic stop on your getaway. From Húskavik you can journey down to the most powerful waterfall in the country; Dettifoss. This awe-inspiring feature is an absolute must see on any Iceland Holidays.

East Iceland

As you travel through the unforgettable countryside of east Iceland, you’re sure to see Europe’s largest glacier: Vatnajökull. This breathtaking mountain of ice is one of the country’s largest natural attractions. It can be enjoyed on a tour of the Vatnajökull National Park which is home to a range of sensational features and truly unspoiled nature - the high point of any East Iceland Holiday.
