Our Hotel Ranga Northern Lights Holiday puts you at the heart of Icelandic Aurora hunting

What Makes Me Mighty Fine

  • Five day, self drive holiday staying at the Hotel Ranga, an Aurora favourite due to its remote location, and the first hotel in Iceland to be recognised as one of the ‘Great Hotels of the World’ and visiting the Golden Circle and Blue Lagoon
  • Plan your own days visiting Iceland’s foremost attractions including the wonders of the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon and the Glacier Lagoon
  • Add an extra night, at the Northern Lights Inn, for a spot of relaxation before flying home

Enjoy a luxury country escape at this iconic hotel in South Iceland. The Hotel Ranga has become renowned for its quality sightings of the Aurora Borealis in the skies above Iceland. Due to its remote location away from the light pollution of towns, your views from the Hotel Ranga of the Northern Lights will be exceptional if conditions allow. Because the phenomenon is naturally occurring, it is impossible to guarantee that you will see them during your holiday. But why not increase your viewing chances and make the most of your rental car, heading out into the night to go in search of the Aurora yourself?

At the Hotel Ranga, when the Northern Lights do appear, the staff provide a wake-up call on request to alert you to their presence, ensuring you don’t miss a moment of their dazzling display. What's more, the friendly staff, at the Hotel Ranga, will be delighted to impart their knowledge and stories about the mysterious phenomenon.

During the daytime on your Northern Lights short break there is plenty to see and do and, by having your own rental car, you have the freedom to explore at will. Perhaps take a dip in the Blue Lagoon, go horse riding over the rugged terrain, or visit impressive geological features like waterfalls, volcanoes and glaciers. Enjoy a delightful holiday at the Hotel Ranga where the Northern Lights are merely the icing on the cake.

And with outdoor hot tubs conveniently situated for Aurora spotting, you can unwind after the day's adventures and still be able to take in magnificent views of the Northern Lights.

  • Days 2 to 4 - Optional Sightseeing

    Optional Sightseeing

South Iceland is brimming with fascinating natural wonders like waterfalls, volcanoes, lava formations and hot springs. You have complete freedom on your Hotel Ranga and Northern Lights Adventure to visit the places that you want to see most. Suggestions include:

    The Golden Circle Tour

Visit three of Iceland’s most popular sites in one inclusive tour. Starting off with Þingvellir National Park, explore the unusual volcanic formations, including the rift between two tectonic plates. Afterwards, continue to Gullfoss Waterfall, one of the most spectacular falls in Iceland, before finally arriving at Geysir Hot Springs to see the vents and geysers that spout boiling water into the air.

    South Coast Sightseeing

The south coast of Iceland is arguably the most varied. During your journey you will see Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers, several remarkable waterfalls, noisy bird cliffs and black lava beaches which are ideal for enjoying some fresh air. You might also spot some iconic turf houses, or visit the Folk Museum.

    Horse Riding

Take the reins and explore the unusual terrain as you trek through one of the hot spring valleys. Be sure to pack your bathing suit so you can enjoy a swim in the natural thermal river.

    Glacier Hiking

If you fancy getting up close and personal with one of the glaciers, why not try an exciting glacier hike? With crampons on your feet and an ice axe in hand, you can explore the caverns and crevasses of the glacier with ease. There may even be an opportunity to try ice climbing.

    Search for the Northern Lights

At the Hotel Ranga the Northern Lights are often spotted, but if you want to be more proactive, you could take a drive after nightfall to go in search of the Aurora. As you journey across remarkable terrain, you will no doubt find some incredible viewpoints to enhance the experience.

    Blue Lagoon

Perhaps one of Iceland’s most famous locations, the Blue Lagoon provides visitors with a unique and relaxing experience. Bathing in the milky waters, let the warmth of the lagoon relax you. You may be tempted by some of the spa treatments on offer and, if you visit in the evening, you might even see the Northern Lights appear overhead.

    Reykjanes Peninsula

This area of South Iceland is particularly beautiful. With terrain that looks more like the moon than the earth, the only way to really appreciate it is to go hiking. The coastline is utterly charming with lighthouses and bird cliffs bringing a unique character.

    Þjórsárdalur Valley

With Hekla volcano dominating the skyline, delve into the history of the Vikings when you visit the ruins of Stong. These Viking farms were smothered in volcanic ash during Hekla’s eruption in 1104 and as such, they have been remarkably preserved.

Other highlights on offer, within easy reach, include the Skogafoss and Seljalandsfoss plunge falls, Dyrhólæy - the southernmost tip of Iceland and a great spot for bird watching plus the Jokulsarlon Lagoon which you can explore by amphibious truck.
