Our Iceland New Year Holiday lets you celebrate in true Icelandic fashion - Discover Reykjavík

Meet your guide after breakfast and head out to see the highlights of Iceland's exciting capital.  Afterwards, you head out to the Reykjanes peninsula with its hot springs, mountains, bird cliffs, light houses and fishing villages.  At the end of the day, travel to the famous Blue Lagoon and relax in the warm blue waters.

This evening, enjoy a Northern Lights presentation, and, if the night is clear, step out in the garden and check if the magical Aurorae are lighting up the sky.  Although white and green are usually the dominant colours of the Northern Lights but other colours can sometimes appear.  The large grounds of your accommodation are dark and afford you a great location for Northern Lights sightings if the conditions are right.

You’ll stay for two nights in South Iceland.

  • Day 3 - New Year's Eve

    New Year's Eve

Day three of your Iceland New Year holiday starts with breakfast, before travelling along the South coast, getting close to the active volcano that is beneath the Eyjafjallajökull glacier.  Stop at the Seljalandsfoss waterfall - a high but narrow waterfall - which plunges over the mountain.  Prepared to get wet?  There's a trail that goes behind the falling water and offers interesting views.  As you travel further east, you’ll visit one of Iceland's finest folk museums with turf-built houses and an impressive collection of farm and domestic artefacts typical of Iceland's past.  One of the most impressive waterfalls in Iceland and standing at sixty metres high, the Skógafoss waterfall is nearby.  Your journey continues to the seaside for a stroll on the black lava beach to see the amazing bird cliffs at Reynisfjara near Vík.

This evening it’s time to celebrate New Year the Icelandic way.  Start the festivities with a guided bus tour to visit the bonfires in the villages of Hvolsvöllur and Hella.  The origins of these bonfires are in the middle ages, when people built bonfires to burn the old things they no longer needed.  You’ll see bonfires all around Iceland, where people gather to set off fireworks, sing and dance as they wait to ring in the New Year.

Dinner starts around 2030 and is served at the restaurant on the river banks in Hella, a small village in South Iceland.  Shortly before midnight, it’s time to set off your own small fireworks display, before heading to the village to celebrate New Year with a bang!  At midnight the sky will be illuminated with thousands of fireworks set off across the village by the locals.  This experience of a life time is one you will never forget.

    Meals included:Breakfast, Dinner
  • Day 4 - New Year's Day

    New Year's Day

Today you’ll witness the steam rising from the Geysir geothermal fields as you arrive to travel the Golden circle route, featuring a variety of hot springs and bubbling pools.  The original geyser is now dormant but has been replaced by Strokkur "the Churn" which erupts at five to ten minute intervals.  Continue on to the Gullfoss Waterfall known "the golden falls", a magnificent three-tiered waterfall on the Hvítá river, attracting thousands of people from far and wide in summer and winter.  Continue inland to þingvellir National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site before returning to Reykjavík.

On the final night of your Iceland New Year holiday, you’ll enjoy a culinary treat at one of Reykjavík's best gourmet restaurants.
