You will be accompanied by expert photography guide Sigurður Stefnisson who will be on hand to give hints and tips about photographing Iceland. Having guided tours around Iceland for the past eight years, Sigurður is the perfect person to accompany you on this break. Extremely knowledgeable in the fields of geology, ornithology, history, archaeology and astronomy - including the Northern Lights; his work has been used by NASA, National Geographic and the BBC!
Sigurður will lead your Iceland photography tour of the southern coast in a comfortable, all-terrain, 4x4 vehicle. During the trip you’ll be able to take remarkable shots of exciting waterfalls such as Gullfoss, Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss. Visit the Reynisdranger and Dyrholaey cliffs where you’ll take thrilling action shots of the birdlife. Explore Skaftafell National Park to shoot beautiful scenery and þingvellir (Thingvellir) National Park to capture an astounding amphitheatre created by the collision of the European and American tectonic plates. At Geysir, cast your lens over hot spring eruptions, in Skaftafell visit an ice cave where Sigurður will be on hand to ensure you get the best interior shots of your glacial surroundings. Each and every day you will be discovering and cataloguing the features that have afforded this destination the title “Land of Fire and Ice”.
Spend two evenings in the Icelandic capital, Reykjavík. Explore this beautiful city at your own pace. Walk the coastal Sæbraut (Saebraut) road, capturing iconic pictures of the Sólfar Sun Voyager, the architecturally stunning Harpa centre and the Höfði (Hofthi) House where Regan and Gorbachev ended the cold war. Whilst here, you’ll visit the Kopar restaurant where you’ll enjoy the chef’s special Icelandic Adventure Meal combining traditional and modern Icelandic cuisine to create dishes which are simply delicious!

Day 1 - Arrival
On arrival at Reykjavík airport, you will transfer to the Hotel Alda. Situated in the heart of the city, this hotel is the perfect place to spend your first evening in Iceland. Once settled, why not take a 20 minute stroll along the beautiful Reykjavík coastline and shoot some of Reykjavík’s iconic sights? If you’re feeling peckish after your journey, on the other hand, meander through the old harbour and taste some of the local cuisine. Afterwards, head back to your accommodation to rest up for your exciting Iceland photography tour across southern Iceland which begins tomorrow.
Day 2 - Reykjavík - Golden Circle - Eyjafjallajökull
Today, your expert photography guide, Sigurður, will take you on a tour of the Golden Circle. You will have the exciting opportunity to photograph the natural amphitheatre at National Park þingvellir (Thingvellir) where the Alþing (Althing) parliament was formed. Visiting Geysir, you will capture images of a hot spring erupting, while later on, at Gullfoss, you’ll have chance to take shots of the breathtaking waterfall. Using a combination of local knowledge and professional experience, Sigurður will take you to these spots at the optimal time, ensuring the best possible light for the best possible shot.
Later, you will have the exciting opportunity to photograph the glorious Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls. Sigurður will be on hand to assist you with camera angles, timing and any queries you may have. You will then move on to the spectacular black beach of Reynisfjara where you can capture some fantastic shots of waves crashing against the coastal wall. Heading on, you’ll have the chance to take some iconic images of the local birdlife on and around the cliffs of Reynisdranger and Dyrholaey. Afterwards, the short hike up to the top of the Hjörleifshöfði (Hjorleifshofthi) cape allows you to capture some wonderful shots of the black, sandy shores below.
Moving on to Hrífunes, you’ll lodge in a cosy guesthouse for the evening - the perfect base for tomorrow’s tour. Once you’ve checked in and settled into your room, you’ll head outside to try and capture the magical Northern Lights. Sigurður, as always, will be there to assist, giving you handy hints and tips on exposure, white balance and anything else you may need to know for capturing images of this phenomenon.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 - Secret locations on the South Coast
The plan is to catch the sunrise this morning, unpredictable Icelandic weather permitting! Regardless of this you will be heading by 4x4 to explore the remote black beaches in the Hrifunes area, checking out some of the remains of ships which have come off second best when meeting the Icelandic weather. Later in the day you are scheduled to head towards the Eldhraun lava field, the result of the largest eruption in Iceland since humans arrived one thousand years ago. In the evening you will return to your remote guesthouse. After dinner, if the conditions are right, you will be in a perfect location for viewings of the Northern Lights.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 - Skaftafell National Park – Glacier Lagoon
The first stop today on your Iceland photography tour is Skaftafell National Park. You’ll have the chance to get some great shots here, as the park lies between theLómagnúpur Mountain and the extinct Öræfajökull (Oraefajokull) volcano. Reach the highest point in Iceland, Hvannadalshnjúkur (6952 ft), to enjoy spectacular views and take outstanding pictures! You will spend two days in this area as there’s simply too much to see in one day.
Later, we visit the famous Jökulsárlón (Jokulsarlon) glacier lagoon. This fantastic landmark should not be missed by any photographer! Sigurður will advise you how best to capture the astounding mix of colours which highlight the floating icebergs.
Leaving the glacial lake of Jökulsárlón temporarily, to visit a nearby farm restaurant for a delicious meal, we will return to capture images of this astounding child of the Breiðamerkurjökull (Breithamerkurjokull) glacier. You’ll also have the opportunity to shoot the Northern Lights as they dance above the icebergs (weather permitting).Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 - Glacial Landscapes and Ice Cave
This morning, you’ll get the chance to capture some shots of your surroundings as you explore the area by the guesthouse. You will then head back to Skaftafell where you will embark on the second half of the planned itinerary for the National Park. As it’s such a big place, there are many exciting new things to discover today.
This afternoon, you visit a magnificent ice cave and its glacial surroundings. Make the most of Sigurður’s experience to capture some beautiful photographs of nature’s phenomenal handiwork and the best interior shots of the cave.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 - South Coast - Reykjavik
As you head back to Reykjavík, you’ll be given the chance to re-visit some of your favourite places from day three of your Iceland photography tour. Sigurður will take requests and may even make some recommendations of where to get the best shots, according to current weather and lighting conditions. If you enjoyed the stunning Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls, why not return and capture more of these beautiful features from a different angle? If you loved taking shots of the birdlife on the Reynisdranger and Dyrholaey cliffs, head back there to see if there are any other species to photograph.
When you arrive back in Reykjavík, you will bid farewell to Sigurður - however, as a farewell treat, we have arranged for you to enjoy an Icelandic Adventure Meal at the cutting-edge Kopar restaurant. The menu boasts a fusion of traditional local cuisine and modern cooking techniques, changing regularly to incorporate the best, local ingredients. You’ll then have the chance to explore the wonderful sights of the city. Day 7 - Departure
Today you’ll head to Reykjavík airport where you’ll board your flight back to the UK. Why not review your images and notes during the flight and reminisce about your exciting Iceland photography tour?
