  • Day 3 - The incredible Jökulsárlón, Vatnajökull National Park and Northern Lights at Night

The incredible Jökulsárlón, Vatnajökull National Park and Northern Lights at Night

Today you have an early start, in order to reach the glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón while the light is at its best. An incredible natural feature, this glacier lagoon is a relatively recent geological addition to Iceland’s abundance of stunning natural attractions. Formed about 100 years, the hauntingly beautiful icebergs in the lake are kept company by a small population of playful seals. Both seals and icebergs usually finish up on the fine black sand of the lagoons beach. The glacier lagoon at Jökulsárlón, even though it is just off Route 1 (Icelands main road) is seldom visited by tourists on short breaks from Reykjavik because it’s nearly 400km away; however those who do manage to make the journey consider it a firm favourite.

The icebergs in the glacier lagoon are calved from Europe’s largest glacier, Vatnajökull, which sits in Europe’s largest National Park. At 12,000 square km, the Vatnajökull National Park has an alpine environment with Iceland’s highest peaks. After Jökulsárlón, the Vatnajökull National Park is the next stop for your group before heading onto your accommodation near Kirkjubæjarklaustur.
After dinner there is another presentation about the Northern Lights. Again the remote, quiet location of the hotel offers an ideal setting for sightings of the Aurora Borealis, as it shimmers and dances across the sky.
