  • Day 1 - Arrive in Antananarivo

    Madagascar Discovery Holiday taking in the unique nature, wildlife and culture of the island - Arrive in Antananarivo

    Arrive in Antananarivo, you will be greeted at the airport and given a short briefing before we begin our drive to Andasibe. This journey brings you to a stunning section of the country, home to many lakes and primary forests. Along the way you can enjoy sublime views of dense forests, lakes, mountains and Merina villages.

    Later on this evening we head out into the Andasibe area to observe the night time activitities of the famous lemurs and other nocturnal creatures for a fascinating wildlife experience to get your Madagascar Discovery Holiday off to an incredible start!

  • Day 2 - Andasibe Nature Reserve

    Andasibe Nature Reserve

    This morning we start with a trip to the Special Reserve of Andasibe to search for the Indri Indri, the largest species of lemur on the island. The natural reserve is is home to unique endemic flora and fauna, including wild orchids, a range of birdlife and even chameleons and tenrecs! After your visit, enjoy a relaxing walk through the orchid park before heading on to Andasibe village. The village is home to the Betsimisakara (The-Many-Inseparables), the second largest tribe on the island, and this visit offers a fascinating insight into their rich culture and way of life on your Madagascar Discovery Holiday.

  • Day 3 - Andasibe - Antsirabe

    Andasibe - Antsirabe

    We drive back to Antananorivo and head south to Antsirabe this morning, travelling across the breathtaking highlight landscape and seeing the rice fields. Stop of in Ambatolampy for a quick look around this agriultural centre. Continue on to Antsirabe, the 'Place of Salt', founded by Norwegians in the 19th century, this is the only location on the island resembling a European city.

  • Day 4 - Antsirabe - Ranomafana National Park

    Antsirabe - Ranomafana National Park

    We see more of the unbelievable countryside of Madagascar as the Discovery Holiday takes us on to Ambositra, the centre of the wood carving industry on the island. The region is characterised by the elegantly crafted wooden balconies and vibrant window shutters in the highlands. Journey on from Ambositra, passing the 'le col de tapia', a kind of tree resistant to bush fires, and look out over rice fields, pine forests, mountains and eucalyptus trees. Head off the main road and continue on to your final destination of the day, the Ranomafana National Park.

  • Day 5 - Explore Ranomafana National Park

    Explore Ranomafana National Park

    This immaculate park is one of the pearls of Madagascar and on the Discovery Holiday you will have the day to explore its breathtaking scenery. Home to rainforested hills, an array of wildlife, and streams plummetting to join with the stunning Namorona River, it's little surprise that this is one of the island's most visited national parks. The easternmost region contains fairly large stretches of primary forest and, as you walk around the area, you can spot some of the fabulous wildlife that populates the park such as the numerous varieties of chameleon and lemur.

  • Day 6 - Fianarantsoa - Isalo

    Fianarantsoa - Isalo

    Driving past Fianarantsoa, the gateway to the south, centre of the catholic region and capital of the Betsileo tribes, we head south to Ambalavao. We make our first stop at Ambalavao, the centre of the wine industy, for a wine tasting experience and a tour of the Anteimoro Paper Factory, a vestige of the island's Arabian civilisation. Continuing on, we pass Ihosy, the capital of the Bara tribes and the breathtaking Andringitra mountain chain, separating the dry southlands and green north. See the magnificent granite dome and twin rock towers marking the end of the highland and further on, the 'Bishop's Hat', a formation sacred to the local people as their ancestors chose suicide over giving in to the Merina tribes here. Passing the enormous Plateaux de Horombe, with its deep red soil, we arrive in Isalo.

  • Day 7 - Isalo National Park

    Isalo National Park

    Explore the stunning Isalo National Park today, this vast area is home to the immense Isalo Massif mountain range. The hike will pass through lush vegetation before we begin our climb up the mountains. Once we reach the massif, we can enjoy absolutely amazing views of the sandstone mountains as well as streams and rivers, all naturally marked by streaks of green. There will be chance to see a wide range of wildlife, including sifaka, brown and ring-tailed lemurs, as many as 50 different species of birds, lizards and snakes before reaching the clear waters of the Natural Swimming Pool and relaxing on your Madagascar Discovery Holiday.

  • Day 8 - Isalo - Ifaty

    Isalo - Ifaty

    Appreciate more inspiring views of Madagascar as the Discovery Holiday proceeds to Tuléar, taking in new sights of the dry western forests and the spiny desert of the south as well as the Mahafaly and Antandroy tombs. We make a short stop at Tuléar then carry on to Ifaty in the deep south of the country. This is the driest part of the country, with landscape characterised by spiny forest. The coast itself is lined with mangrove trees and Vezo communities. Watch the locals as they live day-to-day in these charming fishing villages before reaching the day's destination.

  • Day 9 - Explore Ifaty

    Explore Ifaty

    Situated on the beach, Ifaty is ideal for diving, snorkelling and is a favourite amongst bird watchers, you can also experience the life of a Vezo fisherman in the afternoon of your visit here. There's ample opportunity to enjoy a range of intriguing excursions today, including a visit to Reserve Domergue, a conservation area with two kinds of baobabs and reptiles like 'bao madagascariensis' an the 'chameleon parsoni', one of the largest chameleons in the world. Between July and September you can enjoy a boat trip to see whales as they come to the cooler seas to give birth.

  • Day 10 - Ifaty - Tuléar - Tana

    Ifaty - Tuléar - Tana

    Early this morning, we transfer to the airport for the flight back to Tana. The afternoon is free for you to explore the vibrant capital of Madagascar on the Discovery Holiday. The city is full of history, a walk around the high city lets you see the Queen's palace and the house of the first minister (now a museum) while the mid and low cities are home to the Rainharo tombs. Enjoy your day's exploring in Tana before settling into your hotel for the final night of your adventure.

  • Day 11 - Depart Madagascar

    Depart Madagascar

    It's unfortunately time for your Madagascar Discovery Holiday to come to an end. Transfer to the airport for your flight home, hopefully taking with you the incredible memories of this island's wildlife and breathtaking natural views as well as a new insight into the culture of the tribes.
