The Northern Lights are astounding phenomena that have intrigued humankind for centuries and it is the dream of many a traveller to witness their spellbinding colours. Appearing most clearly above the Arctic Circle, in areas such as Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Finland and Canada, the Northern Lights emerge as waves of colour dancing across the clear, night skies. What you pack also depends on any activities you may choose to enjoy. However, many of the accessories, clothing and equipment needed are provided during the excursions. Check before departure as to what equipment will be available for certain tours and activities.

Packing Essentials

As the climates of the locations you will visit on a Northern Lights cruise are extremely cold during the winter months, you will want to pack thick jumpers, waterproof outerwear, thermal underwear, gloves and scarves. Also pack woollen hats that cover your ears or earmuffs to protect from the cold. The temperatures on board the ship will be comfortable and the dress code is casual, so feel free to take what you would normally wear, such as t-shirts, shirts, jeans etc. Whether you are visiting cities or more remote locations, suitable footwear is imperative. You will need walking boots, or flat shoes and thick socks to keep you warm and comfortable on your visits to various sites of interest. Pack waterproof snow boots to keep warm and dry during exciting walks through snow-covered vistas.

If you are fortunate enough to witness the Northern Lights, you will want to capture them on camera and we suggest investing in a digital SLR (single lens reflex) camera. As you will want to take the best photographs possible of the lights, also include a wide-angle lens when and for one of the most important Northern Lightss cruise packing tips: don’t forget spare batteries!

During some of the cruises you may wish to take advantage of the visits to thermal baths and on-board saunas or hot tubs so make sure you pack swimwear. Sunglasses may not be an item you would associate with a holiday in the Arctic regions, but they are essential items on our Northern Lights Cruise Packing Tips as they prevent the glare of the sun daamaging your eyes.
