Noorderlicht Ship in the Ice in Norway
The Perfect Base for Arctic Exploration
Listed as one of the Sunday Times’ five places to see before you die, the Noorderlicht Ship in the Ice is the world’s only ice-bound hotel. Each autumn, the ship sails up Tempelfjorden and remains there, trapped in the Arctic ice, for the winter. This unique accommodation really is an adventurer’s dream. The Ship in the Ice creates an atmosphere of Arctic exploration as you look out from the deck over the unspoiled wilderness. The 120 foot Dutch schooner first set sail 102 years ago in 1911 and after 80 years on the Baltic, it was purchased by its present owners who completely refitted it, strengthening the bow to face the Arctic ice, and transformed the Noorderlicht into the Ship in the Ice hotel. This one-of-a-kind accommodation provides unexpected comfort in the Arctic whilst still maintaining a traditional, maritime feel.
Embedded in the ice of Tempelfjorden, the Noorderlicht is roughly 60km north east of Longyearbyen, making it a truly remote Arctic adventure destination. Enjoying iconic views of the snow covered landscape from deck is a fantastic way to spend your time on board. Indeed, with no light pollution in the clear Arctic skies, night time Aurora hunting is an absolute must on the Noorderlicht Ship in the Ice. Nestled within the magnificent scenery surrounding the ship is the incredible Arctic wildlife. The Svalbard reindeer, the Arctic fox and even the polar bear can be found in the wilderness here and as part of the tour that takes you to the Ship in the Ice, you will have the opportunity to go in search of some of these incredible creatures.
The range of facilities available on-board the Ship in the Ice is astounding given its location. Relax in either of two lounges, each containing a selection of polar literature allowing you to absorb some Arctic culture. Enjoy a drink at the fully licensed bar or step on-deck and take in the picturesque views of glaciers, snowy mountains and incredible wildlife. Taste authentic Arctic cuisine as the on-board chef prepares delicious three course dinners, the perfect thing to warm you up after a day in the snow.
