As the Gota Canal cruise sails between Sweden's rivers and lakes you will be able to explore each town’s and city’s unique highlights. Marvel at the Baroque architecture of Läckö Castle and cross the stunning Lake Vänern, or perhaps spend time with fellow passengers as you dine at Swedish restaurants and savour local cuisine. Day 1 - Stay Overnight in Stockholm
Arrive in Stockholm and get settled in your central hotel. Get a good night's sleep tonight, ready for the start of your Gota Canal Cruise.
Day 2 - Depart Stockholm
Your Gota Canal Cruise will begin in Sweden’s capital city, Stockholm. Gamla Stan, the Old Town of the city, is an enchanting maze of meandering medieval streets which house delightful buildings. On the first day of the cruise you will discover Sweden’s third largest lake, Lake Mälaren, and the majestic Drottningholm Castle, home of the Royal Family since 1981 and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After passing through the largest lock in Scandinavia, it's on to Trosa, a lovely small town which dates back to the 14th century.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3 - Depart Stegeborg
Enjoy a guided tour of the Stegeborg Fortress, looking out over Slätbaken bay. Cruise through the first of the 58 locks at Mem before heading towards the idyllic spa town of Söderköping where you can sample the delicious local ice cream. The boat moors for the night at Berg where you can see the Carl-Johan lock staircase, the longest on the Gota Canal cruise.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4 - Depart Berg
Before departing Berg you can either take a walk to see the remains of the Vreta convent church and its medieval treasures or, if you prefer, walk along the banks of the canal and take a swim in Lake Roxen. Savour Swedish waffles and coffee at the renowned Gota Hotel then continue your journey to Motala, more familiarly known as ‘the Capital of the Gota Canal’. Explore the local Motor Museum and appreciate the great collection of antique vehicles, toys and radios. On a Gota Canal Cruise you will also have the opportunity to take a walk to visit the grave of famous Swedish inventor, Baltzar von Platen.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 5 - Cruise to Hajstorp
During the Gota Canal Cruise you will be met by local guides at Vesdtana who will take you on the sightseeing tour to uncover the history of the local Abbey and castle. You will also have some free time to discover the town more independently or enjoy a swim in the lake. Continuing through striking scenery, be sure to look out for the Karlsborg Fortress and the 'Kindbom family', a religious group who often greet visitors with flowers and songs. The next part of the journey takes place on what is known as the Berg Canal and here you will find an obelisk marking the highest part of the Gota Canal (91.5 metres above sea level). This evening the boat heads for Hajstorp for an overnight stop.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 6 - Depart Hajstorp
Early birds on the Gota Canal Cruise can take a morning walk from Hajstorp to Godhogen. Later we travel to Sjotorp with its eight locks, museum, cafe and shipyards. Lake Vanern is next, Sweden's largest lake and the third largest in Europe and finally we call in at Lacko Castle which was built in 1298 as a bishop's residence. In 1652 it was transformed into a baroque castle and we will be lucky enough to receive a guided tour of the castle and its exhibitions. We dock for the night in Vanersborg.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 7 - Cruise Ends in Gothenburg
Your final day on the Gota Canal Cuise can be spent exploring the Trollhättan Canal Museum and the lovely old lock area. Once you arrive in Gothenburg you can contemplate all the highlights you have experienced on your incredible canal journey. Final overnight stay in Gothenburg.Meals included:Breakfast, Lunch
Day 8 - Depart Gothenburg
Your Gota Canal Cruise is sadly at an end today. Transfer to the airport for your flight home, feeling thoroughly relaxed after your unforgettable journey.Meals included:Breakfast
